Flashback Friday...Hey, there George.

The story has been told that Albert and Hattie Vandercar had picked out the name Ray for a boy.
However that baby boy decided to make his entrance into the world on George Washington's Birthday and they decided to name him George.

So, on February 22, 1895...
George Ray Vandercar
was born.

117 years later, on February 22, 2012, George's Great Great Grand daughter,
Aelah Mae Vandercar,
was born!

So, little Aelah, in the future...when your crazy Aunt Nancy sees you and bursts into singing "Hey there, Georgie Girl,"...bear with me, I know your name is Aelah...it just makes me happy to look
backward,
forward and
up
and see a whole lot of branches...
sharing the same tree and the same roots.

Congratulations, Joshua & Adrienne!

And welcome to the world, Baby Aelah!

Flash....FORWARD Friday....

Yes.

Flash Forward.

I admit it.
Being a memory keeper, I spend a lot of time in Flash......back mode.

I am working on scanning my photos, mom and dad's photos, cousins photos, your photos.
I've read The Kenney book that Carl Kenney Jr. wrote and cross referenced it with Ruby's genealogy book and I am finally starting to wrap my head around these ancient photos, stories and crazy, related to each other 3 different ways, family.

I spend a lot of time thinking about people who are not with us anymore.
Walking thru the grave yards with Ruby was a sobering experience. At some point she turned and said "I know a lot of people here!" Sadly, she probably knows more people below ground than above ground.
And it made me want to cling to every moment I have in the present.

I have done a lot of wishing that I could have known more about our ancestors. And I'm trying to track down stories before it is too late. To keep those memories. And in so doing keep the memory of those people alive.

But the memory keeping is not just for those who have left us.
Yes, I hope they look down and are pleased that I am remembering them.
But, I've found that a very big part of being a memory keeper is not just in order to honor those who have gone on before us...but to preserve memories for those who will come after us.

To write it down, to tell the story, to take the picture, to save the picture, so that the little people who we spend our time with will have an idea of who we were.
Of how much we loved each other.
Of how much we loved them.
That THEY may look back and know who they are and who they come from.

It is with this AWESOME awareness...that I flash forward to the day that I tell Erin Elizabeth about the day she was born and how her Grandma and I changed her name 6 times on the way to the hospital to wait for her to be born.

"I don't know how Grandma Susie found out what your name was to be, because apparently your big brother, Drew knew your name, but was not telling anyone...no matter how much or with what your Uncle Bobby tried to bribe him. All he would talk about was "taking baby to the beach."
Anyway, we knew you were supposed to be a girl, and someone had told me that day that your mom and dad had picked out the name, Erin.

I was up from Indianapolis for your cousins, Adam and Ali's wedding shower...and I was VERY happy that you decided to make your birthday on a day that I was there!

There was Sunshine when we left the shower and got to the farm. But then it turned very Windy and the clouds started to roll in as well as Uncle Bobby, who was on the tractor planting corn. Grandma Susie was hustling me along, trying to get to the hospital before it turned Stormy.

We got in the car before the Rain started, but it really let loose as we headed up Colorado. Of course this didn't slow Grandma Susie down and as we flew over the hills in Southeast Grove, I thought of your Great Grandma Helen, who grew up and played in this Grove and I wondered if, while playing with her baby doll, she ever imagined having a real live doll, let alone 3 generations of babies : )

By the time we turned west to cross over to the nine mile stretch, the sky was looking pretty scary. Even tho there was still Sunshine ahead of us the sky behind us looked like it had turned into night. And that's when the Hail started to hit.

Now, hail is pretty scary when you are safe inside, but with your Grandma not slowing down and lightening and thunder all around, it was pretty crazy having that hail fall and hit our windshield head on, but your Grandma was on a mission and kept right on driving. I turned into my mom, your Grandma, and started quoting her "oooh. I don't like this lightening!"

By the time we reached the hospital, the hail had stopped, but it was still pouring Rain, but never fear, we used our umbrellas that we had just received as favors at the wedding shower.

We made our way up to where your mom and dad were walking the halls, trying to coax you to hurry up and make your appearance.
By the time we settled into the waiting room...we looked out the window and we were back to SUNSHINE.

So, little girl. As you can see you were a child of the Elements!
Your crazy Aunt Nancy suggested changing your name to "Sunshine" or "Windy" or "Stormy" or "Rain" or "Hailey" because you went thru all those to get to us on that "Spring" day that you joined our family.

Fortunately for you, no one listens to crazy Aunt Nancy and they stuck with Erin.
And I have to admit when I met you and you were just 40 minutes old, Erin was a perfect fit.

Now, you take that memory and keep it and tell it to your child on the day your first grand baby is born. And don't forget your umbrella...you never know what might happen on the way to the hospital!"

o8.20.o6...Warning: Jacinda is 2

Headed to Lowell again for the 5th weekend in a row...this time for Jacinda's birthday party. No terrible 2's yet, just a cutie in a party dress with princess slippers and cowgirl boots and lots of Dora, Dora, Dora!

The "farm train" was a hit with the kids...

that's both LITTLE and BIG kids...

Emma "easy rider" Vandercar also got her first taste of the open road with a motorcycle ride sitting between Nana and Papa...

Someone forgot to pack extra shoes for the weekend......and it cracked me up!
The hip birthday girl can actually pull that look off...with her styling purple Dora cowgirl boots. And we ended the day by remembering Junior and Janet's anniversary. They were married 40 years ago, today:

It was a privilege to be able to honor those memories with a video. I only wish they could have watched it together. But I trust there were a few smiles and teary eyes in heaven just like we had here on earth. God bless you Janet and Junior.

Directions to here: Put the car on auto pilot...it should know the way by now...reflect on August 18 and holding a certain baby when she was less than an hour old...marvel at the way time flies...and hug your big sister extra close

o8.06.06....Bobble and friends at the Lake County Fair

Ferris wheel, Elephant Ear, Midway, Taffy Apple, Mouse Game, Cotton Candy, Industrial building, walking tacos, pony rides, fried oreos, Grange Tent, fried cheese, cow barn, midget search, horses and carnies....yes, it's that time of the year again...The Fair!
Went to take Dad bisquits and gravy in the afternoon...and he didn't even touch it...so now I KNOW something is wrong, as he usually licks the plate. Left him sleeping and went over to the fair and met up with Susie & Jerry, Dave & Sandy and Janet, where I ate enough for both me and Dad together. Bobble and I won at the mouse game...betting on #66. Took the annual walk of the midway in search of (Jerry: "what are we looking for?" Nancy: "midgets")...the um, SIDESHOW oddities and once again proved the t-shirt true: Too many freaks, not enough circuses." Ah, you gotta love the fair, Dave.

This was Sandy's favorite ride....and only for skinny people. We had to watch from the sidelines because our number on the scale is over the limit. Wait til next year. Biggest Loser goal: to ride the bungee at the Fair!On Monday, I acted as Sister Susie's Farm Bureau Assistant and confirmed once again that if I had to be her I would cry everyday. That woman can get stuff done. Took Dad to the doctor and found out his blood pressure was so low it barely registered. Took him to the Grange Tent anyway and had lunch...and tried to get him to eat, but not much luck.
Took Dad home, stopped and saw Jamie's new apartment and back to the fair for more food and fun. Doesn't this little girl need a pony, Grandpa?

Watched Sandy's second attempt at a flip on the bungee: chicken.
Ate some more and called it a day at the fair.
Back in Indy by midnight.

Directions to here: 9 mile stretch to the main gate to the Grange Tent to the MIdway to the food walk to the gallbladder surgery, if you're sister susie! (2003)

Sunday's Road and the birthday girl, sister #3

The last day of this vacation....went according to the original vacation plan...and was spent with Sister Susie...the birthday girl seen here with her grandkid entourage:
We had a lazy afternoon down at Ellis' pond and a great Sunday dinner where we sang Happy Trails to Shelley, who was getting ready to blaze her own road down to TEXAS to spend the next year of her life. But I have to say my heart was heavy most of the day from the news that came from South Bend about Cody being in the hospital after an accident saturday night. He's thankfully okay...but facing some serious days ahead.
It's been a good vacation, but also a long and emotionally taxing week. But thinking about Jolene...makes me appreciate the days and minutes I have, no matter how light or heavy they are...at least I have them.

Directions to here: 41 to 10 to I-65 south to SR 2 to Colorado to 173rd to sister susie's kitchen bow our heads and pray

Saturday's Road...Bobble and the racers and sister #2

Saturday morning, Patty and I continued our quest to the "corner"...by heading up 31 and hitting the antique places we had been to last year with the antique "speeders..."we're done here"...Susie and Sandy. We came to "Picker's paradise" and took a slow stroll thru the one side and I crossed over to the other side....only to find the "corner" that used to be filled with all kinds of paper, that they didn't let me even go in last year, is GONE...packed up and GONE. Now, this would be like me moving my books, moving my apartment...I can't imagine where this guy went? Anyway, there was a heavy sigh...but I did find some treasures, none the less. We had lunch and I got to see the eldest Hoshaw child...and then I was off to the Lake Village Raceway to see sister #2...official ticket taker at the track, Janet.

Man, those karts go fast!
Here I am trying to keep up with who's on first:

Moore Motor Sports had a pretty good night....that's Casey #5 behind Bobble...

And the Checkered flag goes to Casey Moore! Darold looks good with that big smile!

Directions to here: 23 to 80/90 to 421 to 10 to 41 to ticket gate to racetrack turn and go round and round and round and round...20 laps
